Have you heard about a surgical process which  allows a doctor to do surgery on a patient even if they are not physically in the same location? If not, then this is a relatively recent development in the field of medical sciences. It is called remote surgery or telesurgery, which is an example of telepresence, utilises wireless networking and robotic technologies to enable surgeons to operate on patients in remote locations.

According to Journal of The Society of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons, the idea of robotics used for surgery began more than 50 years ago, but actual use began in the late 1980s.

To understand more about robotic surgery, Only My Health attended a conference hosted by SS Innovations to raise awareness about the growing popularity of robotic operations. The event brought together over 150 world-renowned doctors to deliberate on the burgeoning popularity of robotic surgeries, the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in surgery, and the evolution of sustainable tele-surgery.

The Genesis of Tele Robotic Surgery

Talking only to my health, Dr Sudhir Srivastava, Founder, Chairman & CEO of SS Innovations, shed light on the origins of tele robotic surgery said, “The idea of tele surgery came when the United States, NASA, was conducting space exploration. So if somebody, let’s say, develops an appendix, they always have to scrap the mission and bring people back to Earth, and $500 million is wasted. So the idea was to develop technology that remotely controlled from Earth. We can deal with the medical issues in this space or on the battlefield,” said Dr Srivastava.  “The idea persisted, eventually giving rise to the present-day advancements in tele robotic surgery,” he added.

Is there Any Robotic Surgical System Which Can Help Doctors To Operate

The SSI MANTRA is a Surgical Robotic System. The modular multi-arm system boasts advanced features such as 3-5 robotic arms, an ergonomic Surgeon Command Centre, a large 3D 4K monitor, and a virtual real-time image display of the robotic Patient Side Arm Carts. A robotic surgical system typically consists of:

  • One or more arms (controlled by the surgeon)
  • A master controller (console)
  • Sensory system that provides input to the user.

Live Surgeries Showcase Practical Application During The Conference

Amid the two-day event, live surgeries conducted by renowned robotic surgeons using the SSI MANTRA. These real-time demonstrations showcased the system’s applications across various surgical specialties, providing attendees with invaluable insights and learning experiences.

It May Shape the Future of Healthcare

Dr Srivastava said,  “knowledge exchange, and innovation in robotic surgery. The SS Innovations Multispecialty Robotic Surgery Conference 2024 aims to set the stage for the future of healthcare, emphasising the transformative potential of the SSi Mantra Surgical Robotic System.”
