Monsoon brings relief from the scorching heat but also presents its own set of health challenges, with fungal infections being a common concern. The warm and humid weather creates an ideal breeding ground for fungi, making it crucial to take preventive measures to avoid fungal infections. Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, Consultant Dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, shares insights on preventing fungal infections during this season.
According to a study published by Osong Public Health and Research Perspectives, it is predicted that 20–25% of people worldwide will have skin fungal infections. This infection results from fungi infiltrating the skin and generating superficial lesions, fungus parasitic on the stratum corneum of the skin, hair, nails, and toes, and skin candidiasis.
Understanding Fungal Infections
Fungal infections thrive in warm and moist environments, making them adaptable to various locations, including the human body. Dr Lall said, “Common areas prone to fungal growth include the groins, underarms, under the breasts, between the fingers, and between the toes. These regions are particularly susceptible to fungal growth due to their limited ventilation and tendency to remain wet and sweaty. It’s important to be aware that fungal infections can present differently in individuals, leading to symptoms such as itching or rashes.”
Early Diagnosis And Treatment
Dr Lall added, “Fungal rashes can vary in appearance, ranging from classical patterns to less typical ones.” Some individuals may not experience any symptoms initially and only notice visible rashes. Therefore, it is crucial to be vigilant and seek medical evaluation if you observe any unusual patches or rashes on your body. By seeking early treatment, you can ensure that your infections are promptly addressed and managed appropriately.

How To Prevent Fungal Infections
Dr Lall listed tips to prevent fungal infections at home as follows:
Keep your body dry
After using body wash, make sure to thoroughly dry your body, especially in areas prone to moisture. Using toilet paper to dry the folds can be helpful. If your body stays wet throughout the day, it creates an environment conducive to fungal growth.
Wear loose cotton clothing
Opt for loose-fitting clothing made of cotton, especially during the summer or in sweaty conditions. Cotton is a breathable fabric that allows air circulation, keeping the body cool and facilitating sweat evaporation. Avoid synthetic or thick fabrics that trap moisture and prevent airflow.
Limit oiling and moisturising
Excessive oiling or moisturising, particularly in areas that fold can exacerbate sweating and contribute to fungal infections. Minimise the use of heavy oils or moisturisers in these areas.

Stay cool internally
Consume cold beverages like lemonade or cold water to regulate your body temperature. Also, increase your intake of vitamin C-rich foods and fruits. When it’s hot outside, try to stay indoors in a cooler environment. Schedule physical activities during cooler times of the day to keep your body cool and dry.
Post-Workout Care
After a workout, take a bath to cool down your body and prevent infections. It is essential to clean your body thoroughly to remove sweat and reduce the chances of fungal growth.
Be Cautious with Creams
Dr Lall highlighted, “When applying a cream for a rash or suspected fungal infection, avoid using random creams without proper consultation. Many creams available over the counter or recommended by others may contain steroids.” Steroid creams do not effectively treat fungal infections and can lead to complications, thinning of the skin, increased sensitivity, and further spread infections.
Maintain Hydration and Check Blood Sugar Levels
Stay hydrated to support overall health and immune function. If you frequently experience fungal infections, it is advisable to have your blood sugar levels checked. Uncontrolled diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions can contribute to fungal infections.
