Did Your Ankle Swell? Know About The 10 Causes Behind It

Did you ever notice your swollen ankles and become concerned about what it was? It is said that swollen ankles are caused by either edema or inflammation? The term “edema” refers to swelling caused by the buildup of excess fluid. It is especially prevalent in the lower legs, ankles, and feet. Swollen ankles are generally characterised by an abnormal enlargement of the ankle and foot area. This swelling can be temporary or persistent, depending on its underlying cause. To understand the potential causes behind swollen ankles is important for determining the appropriate treatment or management strategy. Here are ten common causes behind swollen ankles:

Prolonged Standing or Sitting

Remaining in one position for an extended period can hinder blood circulation, leading to fluid accumulation in the ankles. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) (2014) showed that working in a standing posture on a daily basis might cause aching feet, swelling of the legs.

Excess Salt Intake

Consuming high amounts of salt can cause the body to retain water, resulting in swelling in various parts, including the ankles.

Obesity

Excess body weight increases the pressure on the ankle joints and veins, leading to fluid retention and swelling.

Pregnancy

“This appears to be a fairly evident reason, and the majority of women experience swelling in their feet at least once when pregnant. This is because the body retains more water while also producing more blood. This, however, is a  condition that will be resolved immediately after the child is born. Most women suffer swollen ankles or feet in the evening when blood and body fluids build in the lower body,” said Dr Sumeet Nigam, General Physician from Sahara Hospital, Lucknow.

During pregnancy, the body produces more fluids and blood to support the developing foetus, which can cause swelling in the legs and ankles, especially in the later stages.

Venous Insufficiency

This condition occurs when the veins in the legs are unable to efficiently return blood to the heart, causing blood to pool in the lower extremities and leading to swelling.

Injury

Injury is also a common cause of swelling in the feet and ankles. This can result from broken bones in the foot or ankle. It could also be the result of inflammation in the foot caused by any of the disorders that cause harm. Dr Nigham advises RICE therapy to treat swelling induced by an injury.

Medications

Certain medications, including blood pressure drugs, steroids, and antidepressants, can cause or exacerbate swelling in the ankles as a side effect.

Heart, Liver, or Kidney Disease

These conditions can affect the body’s ability to manage fluids, leading to accumulation and swelling in the ankles and feet.

Infections

Infections in the foot or ankle, especially in individuals with diabetic neuropathy or weakened immune systems, can lead to swelling and other complications.

Lymphedema

This condition involves blockage in the lymphatic system, preventing lymph fluid from draining well, which can cause swelling in the ankles, among other areas.

Addressing Swollen Ankles

Elevate Your Legs

Elevating your legs above heart level can help improve circulation and reduce swelling. Along with regular exercise, especially walking, can help pump fluid from your legs back to your heart.

Reduce Salt Intake

Lowering the amount of salt in your diet can decrease water retention and swelling. These can help squeeze your legs, allowing blood and fluid to move more efficiently.

Manage Your Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the pressure on your ankles and improve overall health. Drinking plenty of water can help flush excess salt and fluid from your body. If your ankle swelling is persistent, accompanied by other symptoms, such as pain, redness, or warmth, or if you have underlying health conditions, it’s important to consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
